“Our Devon beach ride was the most amazing experience of my life, to be able to canter along the sand, walk in the sea and trot through the sand dunes is something of dreams, but with North Devon Riding Holidays we can all live our dreams!”
The 2 hour beach ride is £70.00 per person, and is available all year round apart from July and August. You can secure a private beach ride for £100 per person OR book a full day North Devon riding holiday with us for only £120.00 - To keep everyone safe, our Devon beach ride is only for experienced riders over the age of 14 years who ride on a regular basis.
We are very lucky to have Putsborough Beach a short 15 minute hack away from our yard. Experienced riders can enjoy a canter along the golden sands with the waves of the Atlantic Ocean lapping the North Devon Coast. For novices we offer a longer holiday with the opportunity to have a couple of lessons and a countryside hack before assessing your capability for a beach ride experience. Our aim is to get you onto the Beach. You can of course bring your own horse on holiday with our B&B for horses. Wander through the beautiful chocolate box village of Croyde and onto a Bridleway with an opportunity for a canter with beautiful fields either side. In the Springtime these fields have entertaining lambs to watch and the summer they are alive with wildlife and soaring overhead Buzzards on the hunt for prey.
The track ends opposite the stunning Putsborough Manor, privately owned as mentioned in the Doomsday Book. It still retains many original features including a beautiful Wall Garden. Following up small hill the ride goes along the high point of the coast, here you see the first glance of the peace of Paradise that is Putsborough Beach! It stretches out in front of you almost takes your breath away. Excitement ripples through the group as anticipation mounts before getting down ON to the beach. Fabulous golden sand, the sun shinning, clear blue sea. The view is amazing as far as your eye can see is sand, sea, blue sky and in the distance out in the Atlantic is Lundy Island, wow. Walk towards the sea, spread out and enjoy that first exhilarating beach canter, What a buzz! It is just as thrilling to walk along the beach and hear the roar of the sea, all your dreams have come true. The Devon Beach ride easily covers the miles of beach towards Woolacombe Bay.
Enjoy a “paddle” wander up and down the breakwater on the horses. Some go in up to their knees to the delight of the riders, its a great experience the sea washing around beneath you with the waves rushing in and out under you. Heading back towards the dunes, climb up through the sea grass, onto the dune environment and ride away from the beach into another mini world. The roar of the sea is lesser here and you can hear the birds and the have chance to chat about the blast along the beach and point out the various colours of Gorse and marvel at the diverse vegetation. At the end of the narrow sand track you head up to the very top of the dunes onto Marine Drive, enjoy a canter to the top. Heading back along this track you are now above the beach and looking down at the hoof prints that you have just made in the sand. The view is incredible you can see for miles and the Headland is very imposing. A steady trot up the hill and wave bye bye to Putsborough beach. Walk and trot along the village lanes and over the top of a hill to another spectacular view of Croyde Beach, Baggy Point and Croyde village below. Head downhill towards Croyde stables.
Roylands Riding Stables offer a Dunes ride which is more controlled environment for those of you not so experienced – This captures the magic of the beach, a stunning view. This ride will not go onto the beach.
